Why this site exists
Search for this glacier and the guides that come back still send you walking into the ice caves as if it were 2015, when the West Glacier route to them has been collapsing and closing for years and the caves that made those photos famous no longer exist in that form. They tell you a city bus goes to the visitor center when the nearest stop leaves you a long road walk short of it. They describe a five-hour whale-and-glacier combo without mentioning that only a slice of that time is actually spent at the glacier.
None of that is secret. It is in the Forest Service's own advisories, in the operators' small print and in recent visitor reports. Putting it next to the price is the entire job of this site.
Where the facts come from

Visitor center fees, opening hours and trail conditions are checked against US Forest Service information for the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area and recent first-hand visitor reports, and dated where they appear. Where an operator admits something inconvenient in its own words, such as a whale-sighting guarantee that pays out in vouchers rather than refunds, or a hike graded strenuous that reviewers found harder than that word suggests, we quote it rather than smooth it over. What we do not do
We do not walk the trails, ride the boats, board the helicopters or audit safety records. Prices in Juneau move with the cruise season, trail closures come without warning and operators change their pickup points. If something here is out of date, write to us and tell us what you found and when you were there. We would rather fix a number than defend it.
